This is an intro course for kids wanting to try wheel throwing and learn about all the steps of making a piece from start to finish. After this course, students will have a finished piece and a basic understanding of all the steps from wedging the clay to glazing. All firing will be included and completed by MakeICT volunteers. Students will learn basic information about the firing process, but this portion will not be hands-on.
A course syllabus is as follows:
Day 1: Introduction to the wheel, preparing clay for throwing, centering, opening, pulling walls
Day 2: Guided skill building: wedging, centering, stages of throwing
Day 3: Trimming, attaching handles, etc.
Day 4: Glazing, learning about the firing process.
An additional $10 cash will be needed (cash or check only) the first day to purchase clay and glaze to use during class. All other supplies/tools will be supplied.
You will be working with wet clay each day, and you will probably get it on your clothes. It washes out, and you are welcome to bring an apron (there are a few at the studio as well), but be prepared to get dirty! We will also be working with pottery glaze on the final day of class.
